Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue caused by prolonged pressure. They often affect individuals with limited mobility — such as bedridden patients or wheelchair users. Recognizing the stages of bedsores early can significantly improve healing outcomes and reduce the risk of serious infections.
The 4 Stages of Bedsores:
- Stage 1: Redness and irritation without open wounds. The skin may feel warm or firm.
- Stage 2: Formation of blisters or shallow ulcers. The skin is broken and painful.
- Stage 3: Damage extends to deeper skin layers, forming a crater-like sore.
- Stage 4: Severe tissue damage, often reaching muscles, tendons, or bones, and posing a high risk of infection.
Proper wound care, regular position changes, and attention to skin health are key to preventing these ulcers.
