Creating an indoor garden filled with beautiful and lush indoor plants is a dream of many plant parents. And it is not hard to achieve this dream, however, challenges come after you have created one such garden. These challenges include regular maintenance and getting rid of houseplant pests that can take over your plants and harm their health.

Therefore, it is necessary for every plant parent who has indoor plants to learn how different pests can affect their plants and how they can get rid of them before it’s too late. In this blog, we will answer such questions and help you take better care of your plants.

How Indoor Plants Get Affected By Pests?

One of the most main causes why houseplants are affected by pests is negligence in care. Indoor plants usually require low care but every plant parent should still inspect their plants regularly, as if left unmonitored for long periods of time, these plants can be infested by houseplant pests.

Moreover, unlike outdoor plants, indoor plants get less natural exposure. And they are more susceptible to problems such as high humidity and over-watering.

Common Houseplant Pests

Some common houseplant pests that can affect your plants are -

  • Aphids - These are soft-bodied and pear-shaped insects that can affect the health of plants by sucking the nutrition out of them and leaving them covered with a sticky waste called honeydew. Moreover, this sticky waste gives rise to a fungus called sooty mold.
  • Mealybugs - Just like aphids, these houseplant pests are also sap-sucking insects that produce honeydew. Heavy infestation of these bugs can cause yellowing and distorted growth in plants.
  • Spider Mites - These houseplant pests are not easy to spot as they are very tiny. However, they are visible by the silky white webs around the plant. Spider mites can cause discoloration in leaves that result in leaf drop.
  • Scale Insects - Another sap-sucking insect, scales are hard to spot as they appear as small brown lumps on the underside of the leaves.

These are some of the common houseplant pests that can affect your plants and harm the health of your plants in different ways.

How To Prevent Houseplant Pests?

Here are some tips that can help you prevent pest infestation on your plants -

  • Monitor New Plants - Before you add new plants to your garden, inspect them for any signs of pest infestation.
  • Proper Humidity & Watering - Indoor plants are susceptible to problems like overwatering, therefore, make sure to follow a strict watering schedule and maintain proper humidity levels.
  • Isolating - Keep your new plants in isolation from other plants to monitor any indications of pests.
  • Air Circulation - Proper airflow around the plants can solve pest problems for every indoor plant.
  • Cleanliness - It is essential to keep your plants clean. Prune dead plant parts and use a moist towel to wipe off dust and dirt from various plant parts.
