The American Gold Eagle program was initiated in 1986, following the passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act in 1985. With the passage of this statute, the United States government was able to produce gold bullion coins using domestic miners. 

The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, a vintage American coin, served as the source of inspiration for the design of this piece. The obverse of the coin depicts Lady Liberty holding a torch and an olive branch, symbols of freedom and peace, like the silver eagle.

• Unlike many other bullion coins in circulation today, the American Gold Eagle is not made entirely of gold. On the contrary, it is composed of significant amounts of silver and copper, as well as 91.67 per cent 22-karat gold.
