Need a way to cool off this summer? Head to one of Idaho’s scenic rivers! The state is home to thousands of miles of rivers, and many of them are easily accessible. Float the Boise River near Downtown Boise or spend a few days partaking in the Snake River rafting Idaho loves! Whether you call the state home or you’re passing through, here are a few rivers where the waters are nice and cool even on the hottest days of summer.

Boise River

The Boise River cuts through the middle of Boise itself. Throughout the summer, it’s open to floating, swimming, and fishing. While it does have a few strong currents here and there, the Boise River offers a leisurely experience. It’s great for kids and adults alike. If you’re floating, head to Barber Park, southeast of downtown. There, you can find tube and raft rentals if you don’t have your own. From there, you can meander along the river to Ann Morrison Park and the exit point for river floaters.

Snake River

The Snake River may be Idaho’s most famous river. It stretches from eastern Idaho and the Tetons, all the way to western Idaho, where you’ll find Hells Canyon. Hells Canyon is an outdoor enthusiast's wonderland. You can hike, camp, and of course, go rafting Hells Canyon Idaho! You can even book a multi-day rafting trip down the Snake River and through the canyon. It’s a great way to cool off and get out of town for a while.

Payette River

Another river not too far from Boise, it’s easy to get to and highly accessible for anyone looking to raft, kayak, float, swim, or fish. If you want to float or swim, one popular destination is Wild Rose Park by Black Canyon Dam in Emmett (just north of Boise). It’s a great place to have a picnic and to cool off in the water.

Salmon River

Going into central Idaho, you’ll find a number of wild rivers, including the Salmon River. This river cuts through some of Idaho’s most scenic wilderness. If you’re looking for a way to cool down that’s a little more out of the way (but still easily accessible), the Salmon River is the place to be. Enjoy a few days of whitewater rafting or settle in at one of the many campgrounds along the river.
