As a trope, enemies to lovers book must establish why the main couple can't get together early on even if they have a burning desire for each other. In contrast to the best friends to lovers plot, the opponents can compete for job advancement, be on opposing sides of a battle, or despise one another greatly.

Detailed plans and conspiracies that temporarily require the enemies to play on the same team are frequently found in the best foes to love books. They require a motive for discussing it. One bed may be available, or they may need to cooperate to defeat an adversary they both despise. Whatever the storyline, watching two rivals fall in love is always entertaining.

The relationships between the main characters in these books always get off to a rocky start. Reading books about enemies-to-lovers that focus more on a good dose of rivalry than an outright hatred of one another is also entertaining.
