Well, emphasis on might. With any trip into Idaho’s wilderness, there are no guarantees. These animals may make an appearance on your Hells Canyon rafting trip, or they might be nowhere to be found. Or, they could be there, but you were looking the other way at the time. Either way, keep an eye out for these animals on your trip.

Elk and Cougars and Bears, Oh My!

Hells Canyon is populated with many large mammals, the largest of which include elk. You’ll also find deer, mountain goats, and big horn sheep. Elk and deer can be spotted near the banks of the Snake River, while goats and sheep can be spotted along rocky cliffs and outcroppings.

Black bears may also make an appearance. Cougars, also known as mountain lions, live throughout the canyon, as well, but they tend to be reclusive. If you spot a mountain lion (which isn’t easy), take precautions and keep your distance. They are predators and can be dangerous.

Birds of Prey

Hells Canyon is the place to see an array of birds of prey. Many species, like bald eagles and golden eagles, roost throughout the canyon and can be seen in the skies. You’ll also find peregrine falcons, osprey, and more.

You may also spot a number of birds, including giant blue herons, California quail, ruffed grouses, chukars, and several owl species. If you’re going on a Hells Canyon trip, consider bringing along a bird guidebook or app to help you identify the many birds of the region.

Under the Rapids

We can’t talk about rafting Hells Canyon without mentioning the fish. Just as there are all kinds of animals on the shores and skies, there’s a lot to spot under the rapids. This includes salmon, rainbow trout, catfish, smallmouth bass, and even sturgeon.

Who knows, you may get lucky while rafting Hells Canyon Idaho and spot one of the massive white sturgeon that can be found along this stretch of the Snake River. They aren’t common, but when you see one, it’s exhilarating!
