The Intern Pharmacist Oral Exam is the final and most crucial step in your journey to becoming a fully qualified pharmacist in Australia. Conducted by the Pharmacy Board of Australia, this exam evaluates your readiness for independent practice by testing your clinical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and professional communication abilities.
At Elite Expertise, we understand that this can be a nerve-wracking experience for many candidates. But with the right preparation and guidance, it can become a rewarding milestone in your pharmacy career. We’re here to support you every step of the way—making the Intern Pharmacist Oral Exam not just manageable, but a confident stride toward success.
Exam Structure and Eligibility
The Intern Pharmacist Oral Exam is held three times a year—in February, July, and October. To be eligible, you must have completed at least 75% of your approved supervised practice hours. Since October 2020, the Pharmacy Board has revised the required practice hours from 1,824 to 1,575 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The total duration of the exam is approximately 35 minutes and is divided into three parts:
Part A: Primary Healthcare (10 minutes)
This section involves a role-play scenario where you identify primary healthcare issues and recommend suitable over-the-counter products along with lifestyle advice. If needed, referral to a general practitioner is expected. No reference materials are allowed during this section.
Part B: Legal and Ethical Practice (5 minutes)
In this part, you will be given a case scenario that requires you to address legal and ethical concerns. You must explain the appropriate actions to ensure a satisfactory outcome for the patient. This section is also closed-book.
Part C: Problem-Solving and Communication (20 minutes)
This open-book section tests your ability to resolve prescription-related issues or patient concerns. You may encounter situations involving drug interactions, contraindications, incorrect dosing, duplicate therapies, or legal prescribing errors. Effective communication with healthcare professionals and strong patient history-taking skills are key to performing well here.
