The Korea Football Association reviewed candidates for the next head coach through a marathon meeting. There is now one step left until the final candidate selection.

Jeong Hae-seong, chairman of the Korea Football Association's Power Strengthening Committee, and members held the 9th meeting for about 5 hours somewhere in Seoul on the afternoon of the 18th to select a new national team coach.

According to the association, nine members, including Chairman Jeong Hae-seong, attended the meeting that day. Gangwon FC coach Yoon Jeong-hwan attended via video, while Soongsil University coach Park Seong-bae did not attend.

The Power Strengthening Committee evaluated the 12 manager candidates selected through a meeting held on the 3rd by watching videos and materials containing key tactical details such as attack and defense organization and play style, and recommended candidates for negotiation.

The Power Enhancement Committee plans to select the final negotiation partner through its 10th meeting to be held in the near future.

An association official said, “Both domestic and foreign coaches were named as candidates for the next director, but more foreign leaders were included. Negotiations will take place after the next meeting. “The final candidates will be around 5 people,” he explained.

The Power Strengthening Committee is expected to speed up the process of appointing a new director within this month.

Last February, the association dismissed coach Jürgen Klinsmann after less than a year due to lack of leadership and attendance issues. Chairman Jeong Hae-seong announced that he would appoint a new head in early May, but faced difficulties in appointing the next coach, and temporarily handed over the baton to coaches Hwang Seon-hong and Kim Do-hoon in March and June, respectively, to prepare for the 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup Asia Region 2. The preliminary round was held.

Even in a chaotic situation where the head coach changed three times due to the inability to appoint the next coach, Korea maintained Pot 1 status in the 3rd preliminary round by finishing the second round of the 2026 North and Central America World Cup with 5 wins, 1 draw, and no loss.

The third qualifying round starts in September, but there is no time. There is not much time as we have to identify the national team at the same time as the opposing team, which will be decided after the 3rd preliminary group draw held on the 27th.

Korea, which experienced difficulties and a change of coach in the previous World Cup 3rd qualifying round, needs time for a new leader to reduce trial and error.

A total of 48 teams participated in the 2026 North and Central America World Cup, and Asia was given 8.5 spots. Korea, aiming for the finals, needs to secure the six tickets allocated to the third preliminary round and begin preparations for the competition early. 스포츠토토
