Throughout the years, the world of cricket has expanded from its birthplace in England to the rest of the world. While the sport was translated into a common street activity in India, other countries where cricket was also popular needed a stadium. There were plenty of cricket grounds built in various places in the world, and the architecture and style are getting more modern by the minute.

In this short piece, we have listed down the top cricket stadiums in the world.

Lords (London)

When you ask cricket enthusiasts about what they think is the best IPL stadium in the world, they will probably tell you that it is the Lords' Stadium in the United Kingdom.

Also known as the “Home of Cricket”, it is widely regarded as the oldest sporting establishment primarily dedicated to the world of cricket. The Lords Stadium was founded in 1814, and the cricket ground is already 205 years old this year.

The cricket stadium was considered a world heritage site because it has a lot of history. The sporting ground became the venue of some of the crucial matches in history and is also primarily the host of the Ashes Test series of competitions.

The Wanderers Stadium (Johannesburg)

Among the stadiums on this list, The Wanderers Stadium is the newest one, established in 1956 with the replacement of the old stadium with the new one. The stadium was also nicknamed the “Bull Ring” among the residents due to the infamous design resembling an oval arena being used to hold bullfights.

The open area design of the arena, along with the ambiance created within the stadium, can be a bit overwhelming to the visiting cricketing team.

Sydney Cricket Ground (Sydney)

Sydney Cricket Ground, also known as the SCG, this cricket ground is home to many professional cricket teams, and it has a sitting capacity of 46,000. The stadium houses one canopy that still bears the old design and was never updated, called the Green Roofed Ladies Pavilion.

The SCG is the home ground of the Australian national cricket team, and they have plenty of victories in this sports establishment. In 1929, cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman made a high score on this same field.

Newlands Cricket Ground (Cape Town)

The Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town was situated between Devil's Peak and Table Mountain. The IPL stadium has had plenty of historical moments since its inauguration in 1889. The sporting ground was also host to several international test competitions.

The cricket stadium is also the home ground of the cricket team, Cape Cobras. Before its renovation, the cricket ground had plenty of areas for seating and vistas to appreciate the majestic scenery of the mountain, as mentioned earlier landscapes.

Eden Park Cricket Stadium (Auckland)

In New Zealand, a huge cricket stadium called the Eden Park Cricket Stadium in Auckland, with a maximum spectator capacity of 42,000, is deemed the biggest in the country.

The sporting ground has been in operation since its establishment in 1903, and it also serves as the home to the national cricket team. The cricket stadium was also renovated and, since then, has been considered the most well-lighted cricket stadium in the world.

Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai)

India has plenty of cricket stadiums, but none can surpass the grandeur of the Wankhede Stadium. The aforementioned sporting ground houses the headquarters of the Mumbai Cricket Association, as well as the training ground of the famous cricket franchise, Mumbai Indians.

The Oval (London)

The Oval stadium was located in Kennington, in the South of Thames, London. To separate it from the similarly named “Kensington Oval” in Barbados, the stadium was renamed the “Kia Oval” to commemorate its primary sponsor.

The sporting ground was built in 1845, making it much younger than the Lord's Stadium in London, which is widely regarded as the oldest cricket stadium in the world. Despite its recent establishment, the history of the stadium goes way back 300 years, in 1724, when the first recorded professional cricket game was held.

Eden Gardens (Kolkata)

Eden Gardens, also known as the sport of cricket’s “Colosseum”, is the second-largest stadium dedicated to the game of cricket. The sporting ground was established in 1864 with a seating capacity of 90,000. As of late, the IPL stadium was the home ground of the Indian Premier League cricket club, Kolkata Knight Riders, as well as the Bengal Cricket squad and the Indian national team.

Kensington Oval (Barbados)

The Kensington Oval was a cricket stadium located in Bridgetown, Barbados. The sporting ground was built in 1871, and it has been 150 years since the cricket stadium was established. For a lot of local cricket fans, the stadium was nicknamed “the Mecca of cricket” due to its iconic structure.

The Barbadian cricket stadium was host to plenty of central and international competitions, such as the T20 EC 2010 and the Cricket World Cup in 2007. Due to the elite status of the cricket ground on the international cricket stage, the sporting establishment gained several awards, such as the 2010 Award for Sports from the Institution of Structural Engineers.

The WACA (Perth)

The Australians are credited for building the grandest cricket stadiums in the world, with our third entry on the list, “The WACA”, being no exception. Established in 1890, the cricket stadium was being considered as the fastest bowlers cricket ground in the globe.

The WACA stadium also has a maximum seating capacity of 24,000 cricket fans. The cricket ground has a rich history dating back to 1890 and has sought a few of the fastest test cricket matches.
