How to Use Runes in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
Combatting enemies in Elden Ring earns players Runes that can be spent to improve individual Attribute levels. Later in the game, however, this process can become far more efficient with an invaluable item called Larval Tear.
Great Runes are often dropped by bosses in the Elden Ring, but must be restored and activated at a Divine Tower near where players have picked them up.
Level Up
To help ensure that your character can face all the challenges presented in elden ring runes: Shadow of the Erdtree, an extensive amount of leveling will be necessary. Luckily, there are multiple efficient methods to obtain Runes quickly so as to accelerate character builds.
One effective method for leveling up quickly without entering dungeons is visiting various Sites of Grace throughout the Lands Between and resting at each. Doing this will require some Runes but is an efficient and quick way of levelling up.
One way of increasing the potency of builds is locating and activating Great elden ring runes that have been dropped by defeated mainline bosses, which can then be activated at their regional Divine Tower to activate powerful stat buffs. While these runes may be uncommon, they can prove invaluable in making builds even stronger.
Upgrade/Enhance Weapons & Gear
Runes can also be used to upgrade weapons and gear - this can help players to stay ahead of murderous beasts or power-hungry demi-gods more efficiently. Therefore, an arsenal upgrade could be essential to their survival in battles between rival factions.
Upgrading weapons will confer permanent benefits that may include stat increases as well as passive and active abilities that cannot be found elsewhere. Each upgrade type and its effect will be displayed prominently on its weapon icon.
As well as regular upgrades, Great elden ring runes are special Key Items dropped by mainline Bosses that can be activated at Divine Towers to strengthen a player for one life. Great Runes should be kept for use against especially challenging bosses as their advantages could make a real difference!
Buying/Selling Items
Great Runes, powerful weapons dropped by defeated bosses, can be activated at Sites of Grace with special items called Great Rune Arcs to boost your character's stats and abilities for as long as they exist. When activated, activating one will boost its benefits to your stats and abilities for as long as it lasts.
Leveling up costs elden ring runes, which can become increasingly costly as you advance to higher levels. There is, however, an effective solution: Larval Tear allows players to restructure their attribute points without spending additional Runes.
Note: I strongly encourage you to refrain from buying or selling items in Elden Ring in exchange for Runes as this goes against the spirit of FromSoftware's Souls games and removes some of the pleasure from experiencing this unique RPG.
Killing Bosses
Killing regular monsters may net runes in Elden Ring, but the best way to earn them is through killing bosses in the game. Similar to Souls from previous FromSoftware titles, runes serve as currency in Elden Ring and will be lost upon death; they can however be recovered at their original locations by returning and engaging with an altar or shrine there.
Great Runes, dropped by defeated mainline bosses, must first be activated before they can be used. These runes offer significant bonuses during a single life they are active, so to use them head directly to the Divine Tower located where the boss was killed in order to activate them.
For example, after killing Godrick the Grafted Scion, head directly to Limgrave's Divine Tower for optimal results. For maximum effectiveness, equip a Sacred Relic Sword and Golden Scarab Talisman which boosts rune acquisition by 20% respectively.
