Are you ordering an N54 turbo replacement and starting to wonder just what you are getting yourself into? How hard is it to swap BMW turbochargers, anyway? Some are relatively easy, but if you are considering a full swap, like from a twin to a single turbo, it could present more challenges. You might also need to replace certain parts, like the crank hub, to handle higher horsepower.
Swapping and Upgrades
Installing an N54 turbo upgrade shouldn’t prove too hard. Using the N54 as an example, you can find a turbo that has all-new housings, wheels, and internals, a new wastegate arm and flapper valve, and 2” aftermarket silicone inlets. When you upgrade, though, you might also need a new charge pipe and BOV to handle the upgraded turbo. With a trusted name in the industry, you can even find an installation kit that comes with everything you need to simplify the installation process.
Changing Turbo Types
Swapping out the same type of turbo is one thing, but completely changing to a new turbo is another. The S58 engine, for example, comes stock with a twin turbo. Twin turbos are completely different compared to a single turbo, but if you want more power at higher RPMs, a single is the way to go. Find a good single turbo that doesn’t need external boxes to control boost, extra vacuum or boost lines, or mac solenoids. This makes for an easier installation. You will probably need a one-way breather, too, since you will have to take out part of the PCV system.
Other Considerations
As for other considerations, installing a new turbo often isn’t just about replacing the turbo itself. You will need other parts to help support the higher horsepower. An S55 BMW crank hub upgrade is a smart choice as the stock one is known for having trouble handling horsepower above the stock capabilities, which can lead to a catastrophic failure of this part. Be sure to upgrade other parts that are affected by the turbo or you won’t get maximum usage and efficiency out of your build.
