2024 proved to be a fruitful year for India in the shortest format of the game. While the focus has now shifted to Test cricket as the Border Gavaskar Trophy unfolds down under, T20 emerged as the highlight for Indian fans. The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, ended a wait of 17 long years to claim the T20 World Cup. The side defeated South Africa in a historic clash to clinch the ICC T20 World Cup, ending the 11-year-long drought for an ICC Trophy. The phase after the iconic victory witnessed the team undergoing a transition in the format. As stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bid their adieus, the young Tilak Varma grabbed the spotlight as the next big thing towards the end of the season. The batter made quick strides to emerge as the №1 T20 batsman for India in the latest ICC Rankings following a breakthrough performance in South Africa.
Tilak Varma: The No. 1 T20 Batsman for India currently
Tilak Varma was handed the Indian cap back in 2023 as he played the Asia Cup ODI game against Bangladesh. The same year marked his debut in the shortest format of the game as India toured the West Indies and the USA. However, it was not until recently that Tilak Varma grabbed eyeballs on the international scene. After India’s historic T20 World Cup victory this year, the management triggered a transition in the side. Among the changes was Tilak Varma, who joined the team for the South Africa tour after a successful recovery from an injury.
The four-match T20I series against South Africa proved to be the breakthrough outing for the young Mumbai batter. The new Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav, placed Tilak at the №4 position in the batting order for the series. However, the youngster requested a promotion in the lineup after scoring 33 and 20 in the first two matches of the series. The captain complied, and the fireworks commenced as Varma started his quest to become the №1 T20 batsman for India. Batting in the third position, Varma hit his maiden T20I ton at Centurion at a fiery strike rate of 191.07. However, the record books opened when Varma hit another ton in the very next match, becoming only the second Indian batter after Sanju Samson to hit consecutive tons in the format.
The exemplary performance by the young batter significantly propelled his standing in the ICC T20 Batsmen Rankings. The Indian batter surpassed the skipper Suryakumar Yadav to emerge as the №1 T20 batsman for India in the rankings. The trailblazing outing in South Africa witnessed the batter jumping as many as 69 spots in the standings to claim the third spot. While Tilak is currently the №1 T20 batsman for India, surpassing SKY, overall, he is placed behind Travis Head and Phil Salt in the current rankings.
